MY FULL BODY MASSAGE ROOM, located in Anchorage, Alaska
FULL BODY MASSAGE Massage is one of the oldest form of therapy and is a system of stroking, pressing and kneading different areas of the body (soft tissue manipulation) to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body. Massage goes beyond the pleasant sensation of the skin, its benefits reaches the different layers of muscles, stimulates blood and lymph circulation, assist in the elimination of toxins and waste and improves the assimilation of nutrition and so much more. Regularly getting massages can have the effect of strengthening and toning the entire body and also releases tightness and tension preventing any strains or injuries and provides overall well being. My massage specialty is divided into two types: pain management and stress reduction. Here is a summary of a few modalities that I incorporate into my full body massage session:
Swedish Massage The most common form of massage, swedish massages are a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax the muscles by applying pressure and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart utilizing gliding strokes (effleurage), kneading movements (petrissage), ciccular pressures (friction), oscillatory movements that shake or vibrate (vibration), brisk hacking or tapping movements (percussion) and bending and stretching ( passive and active movements). Swedish masage was developed in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor name Per Henrik Ling. Popular use for Swedish massage is for relaxation and to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and to release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. Swedish massage increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves reducing stress and is suggested for use in a regular program for stress management.
Deep Tissue Massage Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of the muscle tissue. It aims to release chronic pain and tension in the body through slow, deep finger pressure on stressed or contracted areas. Deep Tissue Massage pressure either follows or goes across the fibers of the muscle, tendons and fascia. Deep Tissue Massage helps break up and eliminate scar tissue and usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage. If Deep Tissue Massage is done correctly with the use of the pain scale of 0 for no pain up to 10 for really bad pain, the client usually feels better within a day or two. Deep Tissue Massage is great and recommended for pain management and should not be used before any physical exertion is required such as before a sports event or work out session. Deep Tissue Massage is more than just working out the knots or kinks. When muscles or stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflamation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. And if ignored, physical immobility grows. A Deep Tissue Massage helpss loosen up muscle tissues, release toxins from the muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly.
Sports Massage Sports Massage is a specialty massage for athletes preparing them for peak performance by reducing muscle tension, promoting flexibility, prevent injuries and relieve swelling. The main purpose of Sports Massage is to alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body's soft tissues during physical activity and is typically used on an athlete before, during and after sport events. When minor injuries and lesions occur, Sports Massage can speed up recovery time. Depending on the needs of the althlete, a variety of techniques are used that often includes a blend of traditional Swedish Massage techniques and Shiatsu Massage techniques. These are just a few common examples and can range and vary as each type of sports has different demands on the players and various muscle groups.
Accupressure Massage Accupressure Massage is an ancient Chinese technique based on the principle of acupuncture and involves the use of finger pressure on specific points along the body. Accupressure Massage is a way of accessing and releasing blocked or congested energy centers in the body. Chinese Medicine believe the points to be junctures of meridian pathways that carry the energy called Chi. Western scientist have also mapped out and proven the existence of these points using electrical devices. Accupressure Massage therapy stimulates and activates the body's own energies to help fight illness and restore harmony. The stimulation removes energy blockages by diffusing toxic build up that accumulates in the muscle tissue. It is this accumulation of toxins (i.e lactic acid) that causes stiffness and soreness throughout the body. Stiffness on the muscles put abnormal pressure on the nerves, and blood and lymph vessels and in return affects both the skeletal systems and internal organ functions. Accupressure is usually performed with finger or thumb pressure and sometimes with blunt objects utilizing rubbing, Kneading, Percussion and vibration techniques.
HOW I GIVE A GREAT FULL BODY MASSAGE There are several keys to giving and receiving a great full body massage. One of the most important key is communication. The massage client needs to know that they are welcomed to express the kind of massage that they want and that it is okay for them to request not to have certain things included in their sessions such as gluteal work. And just as important, the massage therapist needs to listen to the clients and adhere to thier request. A common situation is the clients comes in with a low back pain complaint and all properly trained massage therapist understands that injury, stress and/or tension in this area can greatly effect the lower back (other muscles may be related too, this is just an example) so the massage therapist plans a good work out for the glutes which are very sensitive and sore, even with slight pressure can be very uncomfortable. When a muscle is in distress even a gentle rub can be excrutiating and this comes back to the client letting the therapist know that it hurts. Pain levels ranges from 0-10 and can vary greatly from one individual to another so it is okay to tell your therapist less or more pressure during your massage session.
With the proper techniques tailored to each individual, human touch is very positive and healing because it releases endorphins. It is important to "set the mood" and have the right lighting and soothing music for ambiance. Scented oils also known as aromatherapy can enhance a massage experience for most people and must be tailored to a clients liking to avoid any allergies. The massage oil, lotion, or cream will help the massage therapist hands slide smoothly over the skin, a massage technique called effluerage, to calm and relax your senses. The most common kind of massage is known as Swedish Massage.
